Helpful apps for veterans from the VA app store

1. VA Health and Benefits

Manage your VA medical appointments, view the status of your claim, and access common VA documents in the VA Health and Benefits app. You can also update your contact information and direct deposit information for disability compensation and pension benefits.

2. Annie App Version 6.0

This app helps you monitor vital signs such as your weight and blood pressure. Annie can direct you to VA resources for health issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), general health, and mindfulness. Annie uses automated text messages to help you with self-care.

3. AIMS for Anger Management

Many people struggle with keeping their anger in check, especially people who are living with complex trauma or PTSD. The Anger Irritability Management app is a self-help tool designed especially for vets, but it’s available to the public, as well.

4. PTSD Coach

PTSD Coach offers activities and tools for managing the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. Complete a self-assessment, track your symptoms, and learn how to use positive self-talk and relaxation techniques to help give you a sense of control over your PTSD.

5. VetChange

This app is designed to help veterans develop healthier drinking habits and better manage stress. Set goals, track your alcohol consumption, and identify how your mood or your situation affects the amount you drink.

6. White noise apps

White Noise Lite (iOS) and White Noise Sleep Sounds (Android) are free apps that offer a wide variety of soothing sounds ranging from ocean waves to a forest at dawn. White noise is helpful for relaxing, falling asleep faster, and getting a good night’s rest. It can also be used to mitigate tinnitus.

7. Insomnia Coach

This VA app includes a weekly training plan to help you improve your sleep. You can track your sleep habits using a sleep diary and receive personal feedback and tips from a sleep coach.

Tools for calculating VA disability compensation

8. Woods & Woods Disability Rating Calculator

Although this isn’t an app, it is such a useful tool that we couldn’t leave it off the list. Plus it works really well on mobile. The Woods & Woods disability benefits calculator can help you figure out how much your monthly disability payment would be for service-connected health conditions. This free calculator uses the combined ratings table for multiple conditions and even applies the formula for the bilateral factor (if you have conditions that affect both sides of your body). Skip the difficult VA math and jump right to this calculator.

9. Woods & Woods Disability Back Pay Calculator

If you are appealing a VA disability rating decision, the disability back pay calculator can help you estimate how much back pay you are owed. Enter your current and previous ratings, your effective date, and your dependents to see how much appealing your decision could pay off.

Career and job search apps for veterans

10. Miltary.com Transition App

This app allows you to look for jobs and job fairs and helps you translate your military skills into civilian language. You can use the deadline tracking feature and receive notifications about tasks and military paperwork as early as 18 months before separation.

11. Veterati

This mobile-friendly website matches veterans with professional mentors to give job search tips and career advice. Veterans can select multiple mentors and schedule one-hour conversations with each. Veterati says its mission is “to transform job search from a painful experience into an inspiring journey.”

Social media for veterans

12. RallyPoint

By joining RallyPoint you can connect with peers, find a mentor, get help with finding a job, and more. With nearly 2 million members, RallyPoint can also help you reconnect with old friends and existing service members.

Entering ratings

Injuries to the arms and legs are entered separately from other ratings to account for the VA's bilateral factor. Here is an example of how our calculator works for a veteran with a 20% rating for a left hand injury and a 40% PTSD rating:

Screenshot of two ratings entered in the calculator. The first is Left arm at 20%. The second is a general VA disability at 40%.

Your result will appear below your selections. It includes the VA-calculated final rating as well as the rating before rounding, and your expected monthly payments.

Screenshot of the results from the two entered ratings. The results show the combined rating of 50%, the actual rating of 52%, and a monthly payment of $1132.90.
