Wisconsin property tax benefits
The Wisconsin Veterans & Surviving Spouses Property Tax Credit covers all property taxes on a primary residence for qualifying veterans or their surviving spouses.
To be eligible, veterans must have been discharged under honorable conditions, lived in Wisconsin when enlisting or at least five years since, and have a 100% VA disability rating or receive TDIU benefits.
Surviving spouses may also be eligible, but only if they have not remarried. They must also receive DIC or their veteran must have received 100% VA disability or TDIU.
If the home is jointly owned, the credit will only cover the portion of property taxes the veteran is responsible for. In other words, if the veteran owns half the home and their spouse owns the other half, this credit will cover 50% of property taxes.
Wisconsin vehicle registration benefits
Disabled veteran plates are available to veterans with a disability that:
- Is permanent
- Was incurred while in active service
- Impairs their ability to walk
Veterans with these plates receive certain parking privileges, which are listed here.
Those who don’t qualify for the disabled veteran plate can get other specialized plates based on their branch of service or military honors and awards.
Qualifying veterans can also receive a veteran designation on their ID or license.
Wisconsin education benefits
Wisconsin offers several educational benefits for veterans in the state.
First, the Veterans Education (VetEd) Grant reimburses tuition and fees after successful completion of a higher education course. Exact reimbursement amounts and limits are based on the length of the veteran’s service.
To qualify, the veteran cannot already have a bachelor’s degree, must maintain a specific GPA, and must meet income requirements. More information can be found on the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs website.
Next, the Wisconsin Veterans Grant for Private Nonprofit Schools is designed to assist veterans and their dependents who want to attend certain private colleges and universities. The grant covers either $2,000 or 50% of tuition each semester, whichever is less, for up to eight semesters, with the school matching the grant amount.
Veterans may qualify, as well as their spouses or children. Children of the veteran must be between 17 and 26 to be eligible. Full eligibility criteria can be found here.
Finally, the Wisconsin GI Bill is available to help veterans planning to attend a qualifying college, university, or technical institution. The benefit covers tuition and certain fees and is separate from the federal GI Bill. Full eligibility criteria and information on how to apply can be found here.
