West Virginia mortgage benefits
The West Virginia Housing Development Fund supports a special Veterans’ Home Loan Mortgage Program. The program offers low-interest home loans to help veterans purchase their first homes.
To qualify, veterans must be West Virginia residents, first-time homebuyers, and meet certain eligibility requirements. They also need to complete an approved first-time homebuyer education course and contribute at least $2,500 toward the purchase. Veterans do not need a disability rating to qualify for this benefit.Â

West Virginia property tax benefits
West Virginia veterans with a 100% permanent and total service-connected disability rating may qualify for a homestead property tax exemption on up to $20,000 of their assessed property value.
State veterans with a 90–100% combined disability rating from the VA may be eligible for the Disabled Veteran Real Property Tax Credit. This credit can be used for tax returns filed starting in 2025.
West Virginia income tax benefits
If you are a veteran in West Virginia receiving military retirement pay, this income is not taxed. VA disability and DIC are always tax-free, regardless of the state the veteran lives in.
West Virginia vehicle registration benefits
Veterans in West Virginia with a 100% VA disability rating are eligible for free disabled veteran license plates. These plates authorize the veteran to park for free at any metered parking space in the state.
All other honorably discharged veterans can receive veteran-designated special plates for a one-time fee of $10.
West Virginia education benefits
West Virginia offers several state-level education benefits and programs for veterans.
Through the Medal of Honor and Andrew J. Trail Purple Heart Tuition Waiver program, tuition and mandatory fees are waived for West Virginia residents who were awarded either the Medal of Honor or the Purple Heart.
The Veterans Re-Education Assistance Program offers up to $500 per semester in tuition or training assistance for veterans who are West Virginia residents, have been honorably discharged, and have exhausted their federal VA education benefits. It may also cover certification or licensing exams or other training materials, based on available funding.
