Virginia VA disability benefits
Veterans in Virginia are eligible for the same federal VA disability compensation as veterans in any other state. However, each state also offers some of its own unique benefits for veterans who are considered disabled by the VA. While some benefits are available only for 100% disabled veterans in Virginia, most are available to other veterans with lower disability ratings. We share some of these state benefits below.
Veteran property tax benefits
Veterans who are 100% permanently and totally disabled and reside on their real property as their main place of residence in Virginia may qualify for a full property tax exemption. Surviving spouses who meet certain requirements may also be eligible.
Veteran income tax benefits
Veterans in Virginia who are 55 years or older may subtract military retirement benefits, up to a certain amount, from their state income taxes. From 2025 on, eligible veterans will be able to subtract up to $40,000 from income taxes. The exact amount primarily depends on the amount of benefits the veteran receives. It is important to note that the benefits must be included as income on federal income tax returns to qualify.
Veteran vehicle registration benefits
Virginia veterans who are permanently and totally disabled, are blind, or have lost or lost the use of an arm, hand, or leg may receive a free disabled veterans special plates. Unmarried surviving spouses of these veterans may also receive a free set of plates.
Veteran education benefits
While Virginia does not have any state education benefits designed specifically for veterans, it does offer resources on college campuses around the state and tuition fee waivers and stipends for survivors and dependents of veterans.
Through the Virginia Military Survivors & Dependents Education Program, qualifying children and spouses of veterans can receive aid in finding the best fit for them and educational benefits.
Veteran hunting and fishing licenses
Veterans who are considered totally and permanently disabled by the VA may qualify for a free lifetime hunting and fishing license and a discounted saltwater license in the state of Virginia.
Resident veterans with a 70% or higher VA disability rating are offered an annual discounted hunting and freshwater fishing license. Non-resident permanently disabled veterans are also offered discounted licenses.
Veteran home loan/mortgage benefits
Virginia does not have any of its own home loan or mortgage programs, but veterans can apply for a home loan through the VA.
