Veterans in Pennsylvania are eligible for the same federal VA benefits as veterans in any other state. However, each state also offers some of its own unique benefits for veterans who are considered disabled by the VA.
Don’t fight the VA alone
While some benefits are available only for 100% disabled veterans in Pennsylvania, most are available to veterans with lower disability ratings. We share some of these state benefits below.
In this article about Pennsylvania disabled veteran benefits:
Veteran property tax benefits
In Pennsylvania, eligible veterans may be fully exempt from property taxes on their primary residence.
To qualify, the veteran must be a resident of the state who was honorably discharged and served during war time. They must also have a 100% VA rating, receive TDIU, or be service-connected for blindness, paraplegia, or loss of two or more limbs.
Veterans must also show financial need to receive the exemption. As of 2025, those with an income of approximately $114,000 or less are considered financially eligible, but this number updates annually.
Additionally, an unremarried surviving spouse can continue to receive this tax benefit.
Veteran vehicle registration benefits
Veterans in Pennsylvania may be exempt from paying registration and title fees on a personal vehicle. To qualify, the veteran must have been a POW, received a Purple Heart or Medal of Honor for their service, or be partially paralyzed or lost an eye, arm, or leg in service.
Any veteran with a VA service-connected condition can receive a disabled veteran plate. Veterans with a 100% VA disability rating can apply for a severely disabled veteran plate that allows for special parking privileges, unlike the standard disabled veteran plate.
Additionally, recently honorably discharged veterans can have a skills test for Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) waived if they drove similar vehicles for the military.
Veteran education benefits
Several programs are available for the children of veterans in Pennsylvania, including:
- Pennsylvania Postsecondary Educational Gratuity Program (PEGP)
- Pennsylvania Educational Gratuity
- Pennsylvania Educational Grant for Children of Service Members Declared a Prisoner of War (POW) or Missing in Action (MIA)
You can learn more about these programs on the Army’s benefits website.
The state also offers honorary high school diplomas to qualifying veterans who left school to fight in the Korean or Vietnam Wars.
Veteran hunting and fishing licenses
Many different types of Pennsylvania hunting and fishing licenses are available to veterans at a discount or free of charge depending on the veteran’s service-connected disability rating.
Former POWs can receive a discounted hunting license for less than $3.
Free hunting and furtaking licenses are available to wartime veterans who have a 100% VA disability rating or receive TDIU for a physical disability, or who lost or lost the use of an arm or leg.
Resident reduced disabled veteran hunting licenses are available to wartime veterans with at least a 60% VA rating.
The full list of options can be found on the Pennsylvania Game Commission website.
Other veteran benefits in Pennsylvania
Veterans with at least a 40% disability rating who are service connected for loss of or loss of use of two or more extremities may qualify for pension of $150 a month. Legally blind veterans who were honorably discharged can also qualify for a monthly $150 pension from the state.
Veterans in the state with service-connected disabilities may also qualify for the Veterans Temporary Assistance program to help pay for food, housing, and other necessities. The program offers up to $1,600 a month for a year to eligible veterans in need.
A similar temporary assistance program called the Veterans Trust Fund is also available to qualifying veterans struggling with the transition back to civilian life.
More information about Pennsylvania disabled veteran benefits can be found on the state’s Department of Military and Veterans Affairs website.
