Oregon Veteran Benefits

December 1, 2025 by Neil Woods

Veterans in Oregon are eligible for the same federal VA disability compensation as veterans in any other state. However, each state offers some of its own unique benefits for veterans who are considered disabled by the VA. While some benefits are available only for 100% disabled veterans in Oregon, most are available to veterans with lower disability ratings. We share some Oregon disabled veteran benefits below.

Veteran property tax benefits

Veterans receiving at least 40% disability may qualify for a partial property tax exemption. Surviving spouses may also qualify.

Exemptions may be either $26,303 or $31,565 of your homeโ€™s assessed value. Each exemption level has specific requirements the veteran must meet, but regardless the property must be the residence the applicant lives in to qualify.

You can learn more about eligibility criteria and how to apply here.

Veteran vehicle registration benefits

Honorably discharged veterans with a service-connected disability may be eligible for a disabled veteran license plate. The plate does not offer handicap parking access or other privileges.

Other honorably discharged veterans can get specialty veteran recognition plates found here, and may also qualify to add a veteran designation to their license or ID card.

Veteran education benefits

The Veteran Educational Bridge Grant provides grants up to $5,000 for veterans struggling to complete their training or education due to debt on their student account or unavailability of required courses.

Veterans and their dependents can attend institutions at in-state tuition costs, no matter how long they have lived in the state or whether they are considered a permanent resident.

There are other scholarships offered to veterans, dependents, and spouses in Oregon alongside federal education benefits. All benefits are listed on Oregonโ€™s Department of Veterans Affairs website, here.

Veteran hunting and fishing licenses

Disabled veterans with a 25% disability rating or higher who have been an Oregon resident for at least six months qualify for a free hunting and angling license.

Veterans can find additional information on Oregonโ€™s Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Does Oregon provide educational benefits to veterans and families?

The state of Oregon offers multiple services to aid veterans and qualifying family members seeking higher education. These benefits include the Veteran Educational Bridge grant and in-state tuition rates for veterans not deemed permanent residents.

Entering ratings

Injuries to the arms and legs are entered separately from other ratings to account for the VA's bilateral factor. Here is an example of how our calculator works for a veteran with a 20% rating for a left hand injury and a 40% PTSD rating:

Screenshot of two ratings entered in the calculator. The first is Left arm at 20%. The second is a general VA disability at 40%.

Your result will appear below your selections. It includes the VA-calculated final rating as well as the rating before rounding, and your expected monthly payments.

Screenshot of the results from the two entered ratings. The results show the combined rating of 50%, the actual rating of 52%, and a monthly payment of $1132.90.
