North Dakota also offers a Veterans Aid Loan that provides up to $5,000 to help cover urgent housing expenses. Veterans commonly use this loan for security deposits, past-due rent or mortgage payments, or utility costs.

The state also provides a list of resources for veterans facing financial hardship, including assistance with rent, mortgage payments, or utility bills through various organizations. This support is intended to help prevent veterans from becoming homeless because of a temporary crisis.

North Dakota veteran property tax benefits

Veterans who live in North Dakota and own their homes may qualify for property tax relief programs. 

Honorably discharged veterans living in the state may qualify for a property tax credit based on their VA disability rating. The veteran must have a 50% VA disability rating or higher to qualify. Unremarried surviving spouses can also qualify.

These credits can reduce property taxes by thousands of dollars. Exact exemption amounts are based on VA disability rating.

In addition, the state’s primary residence credit can further reduce property taxes by up to $500 for eligible homeowners. 

North Dakota veteran income tax benefits

North Dakota exempts military retirement pay received as a pension, annuity, or similar allowance from state income tax.

North Dakota veteran vehicle benefits

Veterans may apply for military honor license plates, including those for specific conflicts, service branches, and awards. 

Veterans with a 100% VA disability rating or who receive TDIU may qualify for a disabled veterans license plate. They can also be exempted from paying vehicle excise taxes or registration fees on up to two cars they own.  

North Dakota also issues veteran designation identifiers on driver’s licenses and state ID cards. This allows eligible veterans to more easily prove their status when necessary. Although there is a processing fee, the designation doesn’t expire, so the veteran only needs to provide it once and it will carry over on their identification.

North Dakota provides tuition waivers and reductions at public colleges and universities for qualifying veterans’ dependents. The eligibility requirements for these benefits vary by institution, but they can significantly reduce the price of higher education.

The North Dakota Veterans Educational Training Program (VET) helps veterans prepare to enroll in colleges or trade schools through tutoring, skills training, and even application assistance.

North Dakota veteran hunting and fishing licenses

Disabled veterans may qualify for free or reduced-cost hunting and fishing licenses through the North Dakota Game and Fish Department. 

Veterans with a 50% or greater VA disability rating can get a fishing license for $10, plus a $2 certificate fee. Veterans with a 100% VA rating can get a combined hunting pass for the same amount.
