New Mexico veteran property tax benefits
Property tax exemptions are available for all veterans in New Mexico, with an even more extensive exemption available for disabled veterans.
First, $10,000 of the taxable value of a property can be exempt for eligible veterans. To qualify, the veteran must be a New Mexico resident who was honorably discharged from the military and served at least 90 continuous days on active duty. Veterans who served less than 90 days may qualify only if they were discharged due to a service-connected injury or illness.
Next, honorably discharged veterans receiving VA disability can receive anywhere between 10% and 100% exemption on their property taxes, based on their VA rating. For example, a veteran receiving 70% VA disability can receive a 70% property tax exemption.
Surviving spouses of veterans who haven’t remarried may also qualify.

New Mexico veteran vehicle benefits
New Mexico offers a range of vehicle-related benefits to veterans in the state.
If you are entitled to the veteran property tax exemption but don’t have enough property to claim the full $10,000 exemption, you may be eligible to pay only two thirds of your vehicle registration fees.
Veterans with service-connected disabilities may also be exempt from vehicle excise taxes. To qualify, they must have lost or lost the use of an arm or leg.
Veterans can also add a veteran designation to their New Mexico license or ID card.
Finally, a free disabled veteran license plate is available to veterans with a 50% VA disability rating or higher. Free specialty plates are also available to Pearl Harbor survivors, ex POWs, and Medal of Honor or Purple Heart recipients.
New Mexico veteran education benefits
Veterans in New Mexico have access to several state scholarships. These include:
- The New Mexico Wartime Veterans’ Scholarship: This award is available to honorably discharged Gulf War veterans who received an award or medal for their support in a military campaign or armed conflict since August of 1990. The veteran must also have lived in New Mexico at least ten years if they were not a resident when enlisting. Amounts vary and can be used toward tuition and fees.
- Vietnam Veteran Scholarship: Honorably discharged Vietnam veterans in New Mexico may qualify for this award, which pays full tuition at state-funded colleges, universities, or other post-secondary schools and partial tuition at those not funded by the state. The veteran must also have lived in New Mexico at least ten years if they were not a resident when enlisting to be eligible.
- The Children of Deceased Veterans scholarship: Children of veterans who served and died in wartime, can receive free tuition plus up to $300 for other supplies and fees each year.Â
Veterans can receive reduced in-state tuition regardless of how long they have lived in New Mexico. Both they and their spouses and children are exempt from the typical waiting period for establishing residency for in-state rates.
