New Jersey offers a First-Time Homebuyer Mortgage Program for all qualifying residents that offers up to $15,000 in down payment and closing costs. Qualifying veterans do not need to be first-time homebuyers to qualify for the program.
New Jersey veteran property tax benefits
Veterans in New Jersey who are considered 100% totally and permanently disabled by the VA and who received an honorable discharge can qualify for a full property tax exemption. The property must be their main residence to qualify.
For honorably discharged, former active duty veterans with lower VA disability ratings, a smaller property tax exemption benefit is available. $250 may be deducted from yearly state taxes on real or personal property. Surviving spouses who have not remarried can also qualify.
You can learn more about both property tax benefits here.
New Jersey veteran income tax benefits
Eligible veterans can receive a $6,000 income tax exemption on their New Jersey state taxes. To qualify, the veteran must have been either honorably discharged or released under honorable circumstances from active duty.
New Jersey veteran vehicle benefits
Veterans can get a veteran designation on their license or other identification card. To be eligible, they need either an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable circumstances.
Additionally, disabled veterans may qualify for free vehicle registration. There are two ways to qualify. The veteran may have service-connected disability and qualify for a VA specially-adapted vehicle, or they may qualify if they are blind due to war time service and are eligible for New Jersey Catastrophic Entitlement compensation.
Disabled veteran and Purple Heart veteran plates and placards are also available, and allow the veteran free parking at municipal parking meters.
New Jersey veteran education benefits
The New Jersey Veterans Tuition Credit Program provides partial tuition reimbursement of up to $400 to Vietnam War era veterans. The veteran must be attending a New Jersey public institution of higher education to be eligible.
The New Jersey POW-MIA Tuition Benefit Program offers free undergraduate tuition at colleges and universities in the state to children of service members who were declared a prisoner of war or missing in action in 1960 or after. Both biological children and adopted children may qualify, but must have been born before or during the time their parent was officially declared MIA or a POW.
More information about both benefits can be found on the New Jersey Department of Military and Veteran Affairs website.
New Jersey veteran hunting and fishing licenses
Disabled veterans can receive a free annual hunting and fishing license from New Jersey’s Fish and Wildlife division. Veterans must be residents of the state, have an honorable discharge, and a service-connected disability of any level to qualify.
