Nevada Veteran Benefits

Veterans in Nevada are eligible for the same federal VA benefits and disability compensation as veterans in any other state. However, each state offers some of its own unique benefits for veterans who are considered disabled by the VA. We share some of these state benefits below.

Nevada veteran housing assistance benefits

The Nevada Housing Division’s Home Is Possible for Heroes programs help home buyers receive down payment and closing cost assistance up to 5% of the home loan value. The program is available to other residents of Nevada but is also designed to help honorably discharged veterans in the state. There is a one time fee of $755 paid at closing.

Nevada veteran property tax benefits

Veterans in Nevada may be eligible for property tax exemption one of two ways.

First, disabled veterans with a 60% VA disability rating or higher may qualify. This exemption affidavit can be found here.

Second, veterans who do not receive VA disability or have a VA rating lower than 60% may be eligible if they were honorably discharged and served in specific qualifying periods of time for at least 90 days. This exemption affidavit can be found here.

Surviving spouses may also be eligible.

Veteran vehicle registration benefits in Nevada

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles has several options for license plates for veterans, including a disabled veteran plate. 

The disabled veteran plate has an initial fee of $8.50 but is free to renew. To qualify, veterans need to have either a 100% VA disability rating or a permanent disability rating at any level.

Using this plate gives veterans handicap parking access and also exempts them from paying state or local parking fees.

Veteran education benefits in Nevada

The state of Nevada offers several education benefits for veterans and their families. A full list of these opportunities can be found on the Nevada Department of Veterans Services website.

Of note, some veterans who served between September 1940 and May 1975 may be able to receive honorary high school diplomas in the state.

Additionally, Purple Heart recipients and children and spouses of prisoners of war or missing in action service members may qualify for tuition waivers at state schools.

Nevada veteran hunting and fishing licenses

Veterans in Nevada may qualify for a reduced-cost hunting and fishing combination license. They must have both an honorable discharge and a VA disability rating of 50% or higher to be eligible.

Other Nevada disabled veteran benefits

Nevada also has multiple outreach programs, many of which can benefit veterans and their families.

The state has two veteran homes in Sparks and Boulder City for aging veterans and those who need skilled nursing care.

Veterans with a 0% VA disability rating or higher are eligible for a Disabled Veteran Permit state park pass at a reduced fee of $30.
