Nebraska veteran property tax benefits
Nebraska’s Homestead Exemption Program provides property tax relief to qualifying homeowners. Exemptions are available for several categories of veterans.
Veterans may qualify if they:
- Are totally disabled from a non-service-connected disability
- Have a total and permanent VA disability rating (including through TDIU)
- Have a temporary 100% VA rating
- Are paraplegic or an amputee who has received money from the VA for modifications to their home

Nebraska veteran vehicle benefits
Veterans have the option to add a “veteran” designation to their Nebraska driver’s license or identification card. Getting this designation can make accessing discounts at stores and restaurants easier, as well as proving veteran status for certain programs.
The Nebraska DMV offers several military license plates to recognize the service of eligible service members, veterans, retirees, and their families.
In addition, veterans may qualify for a free disabled veteran license plate if they have a VA disability rating of at least 10%. To be eligible, the veteran must also have been discharged under honorable conditions and enrolled in the state’s Veterans’ Registry.
Lastly, veterans in the state may be exempted from paying taxes on one personal vehicle if they were honorably discharged, served on active duty, and have a VA disability rating of any level, including 0%. Veterans receiving a VA pension or disability retirement benefits can also qualify.
Nebraska veteran education benefits
Access to education after military service is within reach for Nebraskan veterans and their dependents.
Nebraska offers in-state tuition residency status to honorably discharged veterans who plan to make the state their primary residence and have registered to vote there.
Nebraska also offers a 100% tuition and tuition-related fee waiver for eligible dependents of veterans at participating colleges. Non-tuition expenses including housing, meals, parking, and books, are not covered.
In order for a spouse or dependent child to be eligible for this program, one of the following must be true of the veteran:
- They have a total and permanent service-connected disability
- They died from a service-connected condition
- They died from a service-related injury or illness after discharge
- They were declared missing in action or a prisoner of war
Nebraska hunting and fishing benefits
Disabled veterans living in Nebraska may qualify for a free lifetime permit that covers small game hunting, fishing, and fur harvesting.
To qualify, the veteran must have been discharged under honorable circumstances and meet one of the following criteria:
- Veteran has a service-connected disability rating of 50% or higher OR
- Veteran has a 100% non–service-connected disability rating and receives a VA pension
Veterans who don’t qualify for the free lifetime permit but are 64 years or older may instead qualify for discounted permits of $5 a year.

Nebraska Veterans Aid Fund
The Nebraska Veterans Aid (NVA) Fund provides temporary emergency financial assistance to veterans and their dependents when their ability to meet basic needs is unexpectedly disrupted and other resources are not immediately available.
The NVA Fund helps cover expenses such as food, housing, utilities, transportation or fuel, medical bills, clothing, and child care.
To qualify, the veteran must have been a U.S. citizen when enlisting who served on active duty (other than active duty for training). They must have been discharged under honorable conditions or died as a direct result of service.
Other Nebraska disabled veteran benefits
Eligible veterans may qualify for a free lifetime state park entry permit, which provides no-cost access to Nebraska State Parks. To be eligible, the veteran must have a 50% VA disability rating or higher, or be 100% disabled from a nonservice-connected condition and receive a VA pension.
Veterans who served on active duty and received an honorable or general discharge may be eligible for residency in one of four Nebraska Veterans’ Homes.
