Veteran property tax benefits in Missouri
Through the Missouri Property Tax Credit Claim, veterans or spouses of veterans with a 100% disability rating may be eligible to receive credit for a portion of their property taxes or rent. The credit applies for the veteran’s primary residence only, and maxes out at $750 for renters or $1,100 for homeowners.
Missourian veterans who were POWs and have a total service-connected disability may also be exempt from paying any property taxes on their home.
Veterans who are senior citizens can also qualify for the same exemption.
Veteran income tax benefits
Military retired pay is exempt from Missouri state income taxes. It can also be deducted from a veteran’s adjusted gross income. Additionally, qualifying military disability retirement pay is not included in veterans’ taxable income, and military retirement pensions are fully deductible.
Active duty service members may be eligible for additional state tax benefits.
Veteran vehicle registration benefits
Veterans with service-connected disabilities who are Missouri residents and were dishonorably discharged may qualify for one set of free disabled veteran plates.
Veteran education benefits
Honorably discharged combat veterans attending public institutions of higher education in Missouri may qualify for the Missouri Returning Heroes Act. Veterans must also be residents or registered or eligible to vote in the state to be eligible.
Additionally, the Wartime Veterans Survivors grant program is offered to spouses and children of veterans who were injured or passed away in combat or whose post-9/11 service-connected disabilities warrant an 80% VA disability rating or higher. The veteran should also be a Missouri resident.
Veteran hunting and fishing benefits
Honorably discharged veterans with a VA disability rating of 60% or higher or who were POWs may fish and hunt small game without a permit. Veterans who are patients at qualifying facilities may also qualify. They are also eligible for permits at resident prices regardless of whether they reside in the state.
