Mississippi property tax benefits
Honorably discharged veterans with a 100% VA rating are eligible for a full property tax exemption on the assessed value of their home. Unmarried surviving spouses of these veterans may also qualify for this benefit.
Mississippi vehicle registration benefits
Mississippi veterans can receive a “veteran” designation on their license for a fee.
The state also offers 68 specialty license plates for service members and veterans. Some, including Medal of Honor and Purple Heart plates, are free of charge. Surviving spouses may be eligible for some of these plates as well. For more information, visit the Army’s state benefits website.
Additionally, veterans with a 100% permanent and total VA rating can purchase a Mississippi Disabled American Veteran license plate for $1. This discount can be applied to two motor vehicle plates or one motorcycle plate. Veterans with TDIU and nonpermanent lower disability ratings may also be eligible. To find out if you qualify, contact the Mississippi VA.
Mississippi education benefits
Local school boards may award honorary high school diplomas to veterans of World War II or the Korean and Vietnam wars who were unable to graduate because of their military service.
Veterans from any state can qualify for in-state tuition to Mississippi public colleges and universities.
Mississippi hunting and fishing licenses
100% disabled veterans in Mississippi do not have to purchase hunting or fishing licenses. Instead, they must carry proof of age, residency, and their disability rating while hunting or fishing.
Other veteran benefits in Mississippi
In addition to access to five state veterans homes, Mississippi veterans and service members may qualify for a number of other benefits through the state. For more information, visit the Army’s website on state benefits or the Mississippi VA website.
