Veterans in Minnesota are eligible for the same VA disability compensation as veterans in any other state. However, each state offers some of its own unique benefits for veterans who are considered disabled by the VA. Below you will find a list of Minnesota disabled veteran benefits.
Don’t fight the VA alone

In this article about Minnesota disabled veteran benefits:
Minnesota property tax benefits
Minnesota veterans may be eligible for the state’s home market value exclusion program designed for honorably discharged veterans with significant disabilities.
Through this program, veterans with a 70% or greater rating can qualify for a $150,000 exclusion. Veterans with a 100% rating are eligible for a $300,000 exclusion. This means the county treats your house as if it were worth $150,000 or $300,000 less, which can lower the amount you pay in property taxes
Surviving spouses or primary caregivers of veterans may also be eligible for this benefit. Full qualification criteria may be found here.

Minnesota income tax benefits
Veterans in Minnesota have two different tax benefits they can pursue depending on their circumstances.
First, there is a tax exemption for qualifying veterans receiving military retired pay.
The second option is a nonrefundable tax credit. Veterans with a gross income of less than $37,500 may qualify for the credit up to $750 if at least one of the following is true:
- You served at least 20 years in the military
- You have a permanent and total 100% rating from the VA
- You were honorably discharged and receive a pension or other retirement pay for service in the military
This tax credit cannot be claimed at the same time as the military retired pay tax exemption. Veterans who qualify for both must choose only one.
VA disability compensation and DIC benefits are always tax-free, no matter where the veteran lives.
Minnesota vehicle registration benefits
Minnesota veterans with a 100% disability rating are exempt from paying fees for any type of Minnesota license or ID. These veterans are also exempt from paying registration and title fees as well as sales tax on vehicles, with certain restrictions.
Veterans may also be eligible to receive a veteran designation on their Minnesota driver’s licenses and ID cards.
Veterans who qualify for POW, Medal of Honor, or Gold Star license plates can get them at no cost. A disability parking symbol may be added for those who qualify.
Minnesota education benefits
The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs provides educational benefits to assist veterans in the state who are pursuing higher education.
In addition to federal benefits you may qualify for, Minnesota also provides a one-time $750 grant for tuition to veterans pursuing a bachelor’s degree who have already used all their GI bill benefits.
Minnesota veterans may also be eligible for the Dr. Steve and Darla Frantz Leadership Endowed Scholarship, as well as other state scholarships that do not prioritize veteran applicants.

Minnesota hunting and fishing licenses
Minnesota veterans with a 100% VA disability rating are eligible for several hunting benefits.
They can receive a free deer license, a free small game license, a permanent fishing license, and an exemption from components of the firearms safety training requirement. Totally service-connected veterans also receive first preference in the Bear lottery, and the Camp Ripley and Special Deer Hunts.
Other veterans may qualify for different benefits based on their status. You can answer the questions found here to learn more.
Other VA disability benefits in Minnesota
Beyond tax, education, and licensing programs, Minnesota offers several additional benefits for disabled veterans and their families, including eight veterans homes across the state that provide skilled nursing, memory care, and other specialized care.
All disabled veterans are eligible to receive a free annual state park pass.
The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs also provides special relief grants, as well as outreach through programs such as LinkVet and the Minnesota Women Veterans Program.
