Massachusetts veteran property tax benefits
Many municipalities in Massachusetts offer a property tax exemption between $400 and $1,500 to veterans and their surviving spouses. Exact amounts are determined based on disability level and type, honors and awards from service, or POW status. Full eligibility criteria is broken down here.
A complete property tax exemption is available to veterans who are paraplegic or have a 100% VA disability rating for blindness, as well as qualifying surviving spouses and parents.
Massachusetts veteran income tax benefits
Military disability retirement pay received as a pension, annuity, or an allowance for service-connected injury or illness resulting is not considered part of taxable income in Massachusetts. Military retired pay is also not taxed by the state.
Massachusetts veteran vehicle benefits
Disabled veteran plates are available for veterans with a 60% VA rating or higher. Veterans with a disabled veteran or Purple Heart plate do not have to pay for parking at Massachusetts state parks.
Standard veteran plates are available for any honorably discharged veteran who meets service length requirements.
Veterans with a 100% VA disability rating or who receive TDIU may be exempt from paying most license and registration fees under the Massachusetts HERO Act. They can also qualify for an excise sales tax exemption on their personal vehicle.
Honorably discharged veterans may also be able to get a veteran designation on their license, making it easier to access discounts.
Massachusetts veteran education benefits
Veterans may qualify for a Massachusetts Categorical Tuition Waiver, which can cover college tuition for students in need of financial assistance.
As space allows, veterans may receive tuition assistance for any state-supported undergraduate course or certificate program offered by a public college or university.
Public Service Scholarship Programs are also available to surviving children living in Massachusetts whose parent was a POW or who was killed or went missing in action. For children of veterans who died in the Global War on Terror, there is also the Massachusetts Soldiers Legacy Fund.
Massachusetts veteran hunting and fishing licenses
Veterans and nonveterans alike who are paraplegic, blind, or have an intellectual disability qualify for a free hunting and freshwater fishing license in Massachusetts.
Other veteran benefits in Massachusetts
Chapter 115 benefits, also called the Safety Net Program, can help Massachusetts veterans who need financial assistance for things like food, shelter, clothing, and fuel. This benefit can also cover medical care as well as outpatient psychiatric, substance use disorder, other mental health care, and prescriptions.
