VA disability benefits in Indiana
Veterans in Indiana are eligible for the same federal VA benefits as vets in any other state. However, each state offers some of its own unique benefits for veterans who are considered disabled by the VA.
While some benefits are available only for 100% disabled veterans in Indiana, most are available to other veterans with lower disability ratings. We share some of these state benefits below.
Veteran home loan/mortgage benefits
For first time home buyers and qualifying veterans, the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA) offers down payment assistance of 6% based on the purchase price, but not exceeding the appraised value of the house. Indiana vets can also apply for a VA home loan or any VA housing grants.
Veteran property tax benefits
Indiana offers two main property tax benefit options to veterans or their surviving spouses. One is intended for partially disabled veterans and the other for totally disabled veterans.
Honorably discharged wartime veterans considered to have a partial disability can qualify for a property tax deduction of $24,960 if they meet all the additional qualifications. A partial disability is defined here as someone with a 10% VA disability rating or higher.
Veterans who are totally disabled may qualify for a deduction of $14,000 from the assessed value of their property. Veterans who are 62 and older and partially disabled can also qualify for this deduction if they do not qualify for the higher deduction.
Veteran vehicle registration benefits
Indiana veterans with excess property tax deduction can be used on vehicle tax. The tax deduction is reduced $2 for every $100 of the taxable value of the vehicle, or 2%.
Disabled veteran plates are also available for eligible Indiana veterans. Qualifying veterans include those who have lost or lost the use of their eyes, hands, or feet, or who have significantly impaired mobility due to a service-connected disability.
Additionally, Hoosier Veteran plates are only $15 for honorably discharged vets. Other special plates are available to qualifying former POW and Purple Heart veterans, plus Gold Star families and families of MIA veterans.
Veteran education benefits
Children of disabled veterans, former prisoners of war, or a veteran who was declared missing in action may qualify for tuition exemption for up to 124 credit hours at any state supported institution. These benefits can be applied to a state-funded school such as Indiana University.
Free and discounted college tuition is also available to eligible children of disabled veterans who enlisted while living in Indiana, and to qualifying Purple Heart veterans.
Veteran hunting and fishing licenses
Resident Hoosier veterans with a service-connected disability may purchase an Indiana hunting and fishing license for a reduced fee.
Long-term care, short-term rehab, nursing care, and other care options are available for veterans at the Indiana Veterans’ Home in West Lafayette.
VA facilities in Indiana
Below we share information about where to find VA facilities in Indiana including regional offices, medical facilities, vet centers, and VA cemeteries.
VA regional offices in Indiana
Each state has at least one VA regional office (VARO) that provides in-person services to help veterans with VA benefits and claims. Offices also offer information about veteran medical help, education and career counseling, memorial benefits, aid for homeless veterans, and more. Below is a list of VAROs in Indiana.
VA medical facilities in Indiana
VA medical facilities offer medical information and assistance for veterans. Vets may also receive their compensation and pension (C&P) exam at many of these facilities. The VA uses the information gathered at a C&P exam to determine how severe a veteran’s service-connected condition is. Below is a list of all VA medical facilities in Indiana.
