If you took the drug Tepezza to treat your thyroid eye disease and later developed tinnitus or hearing loss, you may be owed compensation. Learn more below about Tepezza lawsuits.
What is Tepezza?
Tepezza (teprotumumab-trbw) is an infusion drug created to treat thyroid eye disease (TED), also known as Graves’ ophthalmopathy. It is the first of its kind to be FDA approved.
TED is a rare disease that causes damage to the tissue surrounding the eyes. The connective, fatty, and muscle tissue around the eye becomes inflamed, swells, and changes. This can lead to a variety of symptoms including pain, bulging or watery eyes, double vision, and a gritty feeling in the eye.
Tepezza is meant to help alleviate these symptoms, often through multiple infusions.
Tepezza and hearing loss
Multiple otolaryngologists – ear, nose, and throat specialists – have shared or written on their concerns about the side effects of teprotumumab, the primary component of Tepezza.
Several studies have also been published in respected journals explaining how the drug can cause hearing loss, including one study by Horizon Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Tepezza. The Horizon Pharmaceutical study, published in the American Journal of Ophthalmology, found over 80% of patients in their sample experienced at least one “new subjective otologic symptom,” like tinnitus, autophony, or hearing loss.
Tepezza lawsuit
A lawsuit was filed on behalf of an Illinois man named Daniel Weibel in Aug. of 2022 against Tepezza manufacturer, Horizon Pharmaceuticals Inc. (a subsidiary of Horizon Therapeutics PLC).
According to the complaint, Weibel had multiple infusions of Tepezza between June and Sept. of 2020 and developed permanent hearing loss. The complaint also alleges Weibel and his doctor were not made aware of any risks of the drug causing hearing loss, tinnitus, or other hearing damage.
Finally, the complaint further claims that Weibel’s story is not unique. Rather, thousands of others have also experienced permanent hearing loss or damage after taking Tepezza, but Horizon has been negligent by failing to warn users of these risks.
There have not been any settlements in the Tepezza lawsuit yet. Lawyers are currently working to help others who took Tepezza and suffered hearing damage build their case.
