VA disability benefits in Colorado
Veterans in Colorado are eligible for the same federal VA disability compensation as veterans in any other state. However, each state offers some of its own unique benefits for veterans who are considered disabled by the VA. While some benefits are available only for 100% disabled veterans in Colorado, most are available to other veterans with lower disability ratings. We share some of these state benefits below.
Veteran home loan/mortgage benefits
Colorado does not offer any state home loan or mortgage benefits for veterans.
However, veterans in Colorado can apply for VA-guaranteed home loans through the federal G.I. Bill.
Veteran property tax benefits
Qualifying disabled veterans may receive a 50% property tax exemption of the first $200,000 value of their home. Gold Star spouses also qualify for this exemption.
Veterans must be honorably discharged and have a service-connected disability rating of 100%. Veterans being compensated at a 100% rate due to TDIU do not qualify for the property tax exemption.
Veteran income tax benefits
Colorado offers two different types of income tax benefits for veterans. It is important to note that a veteran can only claim one of these two benefits at a time.
The first program is for veterans (retired service members) under the age of 55. Veterans who qualify may subtract their federally provided military retirement benefits and/or income from their state income taxes. The amount that can be subtracted varies by year. For reference, in 2023, veterans could subtract up to $15,000 from their state income taxes.
The second Colorado program is for veterans (retired service members) who are 55 years or older at the end of the tax year. Qualifying veterans may claim the regular pension and annuity subtraction on their state income tax for federal military retirement benefits or income.
Veteran vehicle registration benefits
Disabled veterans in Colorado may apply for one free disabled veterans license plate. To qualify, the veteran must have a service-connected disability rating of at least 50%.
Veteran education benefits
The state of Colorado does not offer specific veteran education benefits. However, veterans and families can receive federal education benefits through the VA.
Individual schools in Colorado may offer specific benefits for veterans and families. Universities normally have a web page explaining specific benefits and aid veterans and families can receive through the school.
Veteran hunting and fishing licenses
Colorado offers a free lifetime combination of small-game hunting and fishing licenses to veterans with a permanent service-connected disability of 60% or more. Qualifying veterans can also receive a fishing-only license.
Other VA disability benefits in Colorado
Veterans in Colorado are also eligible for benefits they may be federally entitled to including healthcare benefits, pensions, VA disability compensation, and more. Many of them may depend on the veterans disability rating and/or experience. Below is a list of further sources for benefits.
Veterans with a disabled veterans license plate qualify for free admission to any state park or recreation area.
VA facilities in Colorado
Below we share information about where to find VA facilities in Colorado including regional offices, medical facilities, vet centers, and VA cemeteries.
VA regional offices in Colorado
Each state has at least one VA regional office (VARO) that provides in-person services to help veterans with VA benefits and claims. Offices also offer information about veteran medical help, education and career counseling, memorial benefits, aid for homeless veterans, and more. Below is a list of VAROs in Colorado.
VetSuccess offices in Colorado
VetSuccess on campus (VSOC) offices are located on college campuses around Colorado and the country. These partnerships between schools and the VA aid veterans in obtaining educational benefits and finding their best path forward when seeking a degree.
VA medical facilities in Colorado
VA medical facilities offer medical information and assistance for veterans. Vets may also receive their compensation and pension (C&P) exam at many of these facilities. The VA uses the information gathered at a C&P exam to determine how severe a veteran’s condition is and whether it is service connected. Below is a list of VA medical facilities in Colorado.
Vet Centers in Colorado
Vet Centers provide veterans with counseling and referral services, many of which are community based. These centers also offer services for family members of veterans.
“They brought me from being stuck at 30%. Denial after denial. Finally rated at 70%. Appealed for total and unable to work disability since 2014. Without Woods and Woods, I would still be stuck at 30%.”

VA cemeteries in Colorado
VA cemeteries can be found all over the U.S. and are dedicated resting places for those who honorably served their country. Veterans or families can make arrangements to be laid to rest in a VA cemetery. Qualifying spouses of veterans may also be eligible. You can find eligibility requirements for VA cemeteries here. Below is a list of all VA cemeteries in Colorado.
