Alaska Veteran Benefits

Veterans in Alaska are eligible for the same federal disability compensation and other VA benefits as veterans in any other state. 

However, each state offers some of its own unique benefits for veterans who are considered disabled by the VA. We share some of these state benefits below.

Alaska veteran home loan/mortgage benefits

Veterans can receive a 1% lower interest rate on the first $50,000 of a bank loan when purchasing a house through Alaska Housing Finance Corporation’s “Veterans Interest Rate Preference” program. 

Veterans can also participate in the state’s Veterans Mortgage program, which offers financing at lower, fixed interest rates for qualifying veterans purchasing a home to live in. Vets must apply for the program within 25 years of their discharge from the military to be eligible. 

Lastly, the Veterans Land Discount program provides a one-time 20% discount on the purchase price of state residential or recreational land to eligible veterans.

Veteran property tax benefits in Alaska

Veterans with a service-connected disability rated 50% or higher are exempt from taxation on the first $150,000 of their home’s assessed valuation. The exemption can transfer to a spouse if the veteran passes away and is at least 60 years of age, and only applies to the veteran’s primary residence.

Veteran vehicle registration benefits in Alaska

Qualifying veterans may be eligible for a disabled veteran license plate that is not subject to registration taxes or fees.

Alaska veteran education benefits

While Alaska does not have any state-level education benefits designed for veterans, it does offer tuition fee waivers for eligible survivors and dependents of service members who died in service or were POWs.

Service members can also receive academic credit at Alaska universities and community college for military education, training, and related experience.

Veteran hunting and fishing licenses in Alaska

Veterans who are residents of Alaska and are rated 50% or higher by the VA for a service-connected disability are eligible for a complimentary permanent identification card for hunting, fishing, and trapping.

Other benefits for disabled veterans in Alaska

Disabled veterans in Alaska can receive a free state park camping pass.

VA disability monthly compensation is not subject to federal or state tax, and Alaska also has no state income tax.

Additionally, Alaska has one state veteran home in Palmer. The home provides assisted living care for veterans.
