VA disability benefits in Alabama
Veterans in Alabama are eligible for the same federal VA disability compensation as veterans in any other state. However, each state offers some of its own unique benefits for veterans who are considered disabled by the VA. While some benefits are available only for 100% disabled veterans in Alabama, most are available to other veterans with lower disability ratings. We share some of these state benefits below.
Veteran home loan and mortgage benefits
Alabama does not offer veterans any home loan or mortgage benefits. However, there are sources outside of the state government willing to help veterans with home loans or mortgages. Additionally, veterans may apply for the VA home loan guarantee.
Alabama also upholds a law that prohibits mortgagees from initiating a foreclosure against the survivor or estate of a mortgagor who passes while deployed overseas on active duty for 180 days after their death.
Veteran property tax benefits
100% disabled veterans or those over the age of 65 may receive a full property tax exemption. It is important to note that the property must meet government regulations.
Veteran income tax benefits
Compensation from retirement benefits collected by a veteran or surviving spouse are exempt from state, county, or municipal income tax.
Veteran vehicle registration benefits
Resident Alabama veterans with at least a 10% service-connected disability are exempt from license tax and registration fees.
Veteran education benefits
Veterans enrolling in state public institutions may be granted academic credit for military education, training and/or experience.
Dependent children and spouses are also eligible for tuition, fee waivers, and scholarships. For dependents of veterans to receive Alabama G.I. Dependent Scholarship, veterans must be honorably discharged. Additionally, they must have a service-connected disability rating of 40% or more, have held the qualifying rating at the time of death, be a former prisoner of war, declared missing in action, died due to a service-connected disability, or died while on active military service.
Veteran hunting and fishing licenses
The state of Alabama offers several different discounts on hunting and fishing licenses for veterans. Veterans also have the opportunity to purchase a lifetime hunting and/or fishing license.
The cost of the license depends on the veteran’s age and disability rating.

VA regional offices in Alabama
Each state has at least one VA regional office (VARO) that provides in-person services to help veterans with VA benefits and claims. Offices also offer information about veteran medical help, education and career counseling, memorial benefits, aid for homeless veterans, and more. Below is a list of VAROs in Alabama.
VetSuccess offices in Alabama
VetSuccess on campus (VSOC) offices are located on college campuses around Alabama and the country. These partnerships between schools and the VA aid veterans in obtaining educational benefits and find their best path forward when seeking a degree.
VA medical facilities in Alabama
VA medical facilities offer medical information and assistance for veterans. Vets may also receive their compensation and pension (C&P) exam at many of these facilities. The VA uses the information gathered at a C&P exam to determine how severe a veteran’s condition is and whether it is service connected. Below is a list of all VA medical facilities in Alabama.
